hover over image to zoom

A fine portrait of a westerner by Lam Qua, painted in oil on canvas and within an exceptional Chinese carved hardwood frame done in the western style and period to the painting.

o.s: 16 3/8 in x 18.5 in

s.s:9 in x 11 in

It is now thought likely that the painter of this portrait, Lam Qua (aka Chinnery Lam Qua) was a third generation portrait painter for the west, grandson of the great Spoilum and son of Lamqua; their family name being Guan. He learned and developed his style from George Chinnery, who in around 1825 had arrived in Macao, bringing with him the English Grand Manner of portraiture exemplified by the likes of Sir Thomas Lawrence and Sir William Beechey. Chinnery’s first studio in China was established in Macao and Lam Qua initially worked there cleaning the artist’s brushes before becoming his first pupil.
