An Exceptional Copying Machine

hover over image to zoom

An exceptional version of a Watts Copying Machine, more substantial than usual but with much the same function as those made by the inventor, James Watt.

Retaining many of the original fittings including the fine pair of candle sockets, zinc lined trays and presses, a bone cased brush, (a little damaged) and a beautifully decorated japanned tin case to protect a bottle for the special ink, (rusted). The drawer to the side holds the zinc lined lift-out damping tray. The roller handle now lost; the lid with a well restored split.

English circa 1790.

The Watts Document copier produced a copy document by applying pressure from the original to a thin, unsized sheet of tissue paper. The special ink would bleed through producing a copy 'the right way round'  through the thinness of the tissue.
