Father's Cauldron

hover over image to zoom

A small bronze cauldron from the Fathers Foundry, Montacute, Somerset, circa 1700.

The damage and resulting losses are centuries old and its survival indicate the value and expense of such vessels in their past. It may have been retained and used for generations in this state, (it is still serviceable) or kept and not abandoned, in spite of this damage. Bearing the monogram for John or James Fathers and their three arc foundry mark.

Similar cauldrons are to be found in the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust Collection and the Honiton and Torquay Museums, Devon.

For a fuller account of these and contemporary cauldrons and their makers, see 'English Bronze Cooking Vessels and Their Founders 1350-1830' by Roderick Butler and Christopher Green.
