A chip carved mangling board, initialled and dated 1705.
Handsomely carved to demonstrate a man's carving ability, and often produced during the dark hours of a northern European winter (a time known as the hasflid), when not in use they might be hung decoratively on the living room wall or at the entrance to the house as an advertisement for the taking in of washing.
This example made of Ash and dating to the very beginning of the 18th century.
