Georgian Whaler's Fid

A late 18th century whalebone fid for splicing ropes on board ship; probably cut from a whale's jaw bone. 

 

A generous 12 inches long, turned and tapering from 1 1/4 in to a dull point, pierced for a rope strap, the holes showing considerable and attractive wear.

 

The top surface engraved with the owner's initials 'CSJ'.

 

English or American, circa 1790.
