Iron Inkstand Celebrating Peace

hover over image to zoom

A fine iron inkstand made to celebrate the Victory of the Seventh Coalition at Waterloo and the defeat of Napoleon. The figure of Peace sits with her arms crossed, hair garlanded with flowers, surrounded by symbols of plentiful trade and an overflowing cornucopia of exotic fruit. Behind her is an open topped vessel that serves as a socket for a candle for melting sealing wax. A sprung drawer within the plinth encloses a lead pounce pot and inkwell, released by depressing a tiny indented button immediately behind the figure of Peace.

Probably German, circa 1820.

5 ¾ in x 5 3/8 in x 11 ¼ in
