Louis XV Candlesticks

hover over image to zoom

A good pair of Louis XV brass candlesticks, the stems made in two parts and seamed vertically, the bases very well finished beneath. One of the pair stamped with the tax mark of the crowned ‘C’.

Having spent much of his nation’s wealth fighting the War of Austrian Succession, King Louis introduced a tax on copper alloy artefacts, imposed very helpfully for us only between 1745 and1749. Once paid the merchant or maker would have their article stamped with a crowned ‘C’ (the crown for the King, the ‘C’ for cuivre, copper).

These candlesticks can therefore be dated to no later than 1749.
