Nuremberg Brass Dish

hover over image to zoom

A beaten brass dish dating from circa 1450 and with a rare and wonderful patination to both the obverse and the reverse sides.

A little deeper than some, this may have been used for ablutions or at the table. Used by the middle classes of Europe from the 15th century, when it became fashionable to use and display objects made from precious metals and materials, these brass dishes, although still valuable, were clearly a less expensive alternative to gold and silver.

Most likely made in Nurmeberg, Europe's leading centre for metal production during the 15th and 16th centuries.
