A Pair of Portraits after Jean Baptiste Greuze

A pair of 18th century pastel portraits after Jean Baptiste Greuze, executed contemporaneously with Greuze by Anna Fellowes, according to the script to the reverse of the Boy, at Cours in Switzerland, August 1793. The following month the Girl was completed at Modena in Italy and the pair given to the Duchess of Ancaster. Following her death that same year the pair were returned to Anna Fellowes by Lord Cholmondeley. The Girl inscribed to the edge 'W.C.Sherriman Esq.   

Jean Baptiste Greuze (1725-1805) became celebrated for his sentimental portraits of village life; his works are related to the cult of 'sensibility' in late 18th century France.

This pair painted in coloured chalks on paper and within period gilt gesso frames.
