Porcupine Quill Work Box

A fine, early sewing box decorated with pale porcupine quills on a sandalwood structure edged with engraved and lac-filled ivory bands. The lid is lifted by a knob of carved buffalo horn in the form of a pomegranate, the swing handle, also from buffalo, is reeeded.   

Ceylon, Galle Region, circa 1830.

7 in x 9.25 in x h:5.5 in exc. the swing handle.
