A mid Victorian portrait of an officer of the Rifle Brigade, a skirmish depicted in the distance.

 

Signed to the left hand side of the subject by the artist H. Fleuss and dated 1857. 

 

Oil on canvas, within the original gilt gesso frame. 

 

Henry Fleuss was born in Prussia and settled in England c.1830. He is recorded as being the drawing and painting master at Marlborough College between 1844 and 1856. He died in 1888 aged 70.

As a point of interest, William Morris was a student at the college between 1847 and 1852.
