Relic of King James II

A rare relic of King James II, last Roman Catholic King of Scotland, England and Ireland. 

 

Typical of many Roman Catholic relics of saints the relics of the king held within frames of gold-edged rolled paper, the central heart with issuing Christian cross surmounted by the royal crown. Contained within a turned horn lidded case, the interior of the cover with a circle of orange paper written with details of the relics; 'Blood, Hair & Garter of King James The Second'.

Chiddingstone Castle was bought as house and home for the extensive collection of Denys Eyre Bower. An important part of this collection reflected Bower's fascination with the Stuart and Jacobite cause, his passion for the subject resulting in a fascinating, varied collection consisting of a number of high quality portraits, prints and original royal documents. Catalogued amongst this collection  are numerous interesting relics including 'a segment of the heart, hair, blood and garter ribbon of James II'.
