Topoke Spear Money

hover over image to zoom

A good example of a piece of spear money from the Topoke tribe, North Eastern Congo, (Zaire), circa 1910.

These large forged iron blades, finely worked with decorative parallel channels running around the outer left-hand edge of each side, were used well into the 20th century as currency, especially during wedding ceremonies, when 20-30 might be needed to buy a bride. Approximately twice the price of a large boat!
